Transforming pharmacovigilance with technology and automation

7 June 2021

Pharmaceutical customers today are challenging pharmacovigilance service providers to deliver greater value for the funding they provide. Not surprisingly, service providers are addressing this need by investing in technology and automation tools that are poised to increase both the efficiency and quality of pharmacovigilance operations.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation and analytics are dominating themes in pharmacovigilance (PV) today and there are some understandable concerns surrounding them. However, on closer observation it’s often revealed that most of these concerns arise from a narrow or limited understanding of artificial intelligence and automation, and their potential impact.

To cut through this confusion, we have developed a framework for implementing four types of pharmacovigilance automations:

  1. Basic Process Automation: Applied against manual or paper-based business workflows
  2. Robotic Automation: Technology applications that reduce or eliminate manual tasks
  3. Cognitive Automation: Software that brings intelligence to unstructured language-based data leading to an action or business decision
  4. Artificial Intelligence: Applications/Systems that embrace machine learning
