The drug development industry has propelled explosive growth in precision medicine over the last five years, building on the success of gene and cell therapies that have been in development for decades.

Personalized or precision medicine treatments comprised about 40% of the new molecular entities approved by the FDA in 2018 and a few marketing approvals included expanded indications of previously approved treatments, highlighting the increasing focus on individualized therapies for specific patient populations.

As the expansion of precision medicine continues to provide patients with new possibilities for more individualized care, the strategies for advanced product development have changed, triggering the need for different types of clinical trial designs and health authority initiatives.
